and now for something new.

Today I found myself very bored while in class. This in itself is nothing new at all. The strange bit was that I had actually been productive during class most of the day, and had actually hit a point where I couldn’t work on my current project any long (I have stuff at home that I need to scan for the next part).

So I decided to open up and update Ultra Fractal, and play around with that. I haven’t made any fractals in a long time.

Fractals are such an awesome and interesting form of art. Sure, math isn’t something that people think of when they think about art. However, take a look at some of the fractal artwork out there. And then realize that this is all created through manipulating mathematical formulas. It’s an amazing thing.

I’m no fractal expert, even though I’ve been using both Apophysis and Ultra Fractal for a few years now. Most of my creations are more a product of “let’s see what this does” and randomly messing about with things, as opposed to knowing what effect specific tweaks will have. But it’s still a lot of fun. And it can still create amazing pieces of art.

The piece can be viewed on my deviantart page.

I love to mess about in Photoshop. Photomanipulation is always going to be a favorite art form of mine. It is something I will (hopefully) never get bored with. This was a rather simple photomanipulation; just three stock images and some textures and color overlays.

Photomanipulation is such an interesting art form, in my opinion. A lot of people have a hard time thinking it’s art, but I’ve noticed that tends to be the case with most forms other than traditional art. But personally, I love taking bits and pieces of various things and combining them into one coherent image. There are some amazing things that can be done this way, and only this way. I’ve been using Photoshop since I was 15, and I’m still surprised at the stuff I see that is done with that software.

Here we go.

Well, hello. We’ll see how this goes. I’m really not much of a blog keeper normally. However, I kind of wanted a place to keep track of all of my art and design-related thoughts. So that shall be this place.

As for me, I am a 24 year old graphic design student who attends the Illinois Institute of Art. I’ve been doing graphic design since high school, but decided recently I wanted to make a career of it. That means going back to school to do this, because even though I taught myself a ridiculous amount back in high school, you pretty much need a degree to get any sorts of jobs these days.

So here I’ll probably post things like examples of projects/designs I’ve done for class, thoughts on the things I’m learning, thoughts on current design trends, and so on.

Welcome!
